How to reduce green screen spill on character body and face

Footage that I am working on (in Nuke) has lot of green spill on the character's body and face. Looks like reflected greens on the character, which is also found in closeup shots. Problem is that the green spill is not only in the edges, but also in some of the shadow areas of the actor. If I suppress too much of green, then it results in odd pixelated artifacts, so is there any good solution to clean the spills in a better way.

Also, just in case someone who goes to vfx shoots, why does green spill happen, and are there any definite ways to avoid this at the shoot itself? thanks
