Maya lights not affecting scene !

Hi, I am a beginner with Maya, so please bear with my question if its too noobish.... I am generating a 3d scene which is very huge. I have added multiple lights in my scene but any more lights that I add doesnot light up the scene nor have any affect on the scene. Any ideas what could I be doing wrong? I am on Maya 2011 btw.

This has got nothing to do with Maya (whichever version you choose). OpenGL can only display maximum of 8 lights at a time, hence the additional lights you add have no effect on the scene. That said, there are certain video cards that support 16 lights. Also, if you use Viewport 2.0, then you can view effects of 16 lights at a time.
